Chapter News | March 2019

Happy International Women’s Day!

One of our 2019 initiatives is ‘ELEVATE.’ Its purpose is to bring into focus the women, architects and planners, shaping China’s built environment. Currently, over 42 percent of registered architects in China are women, and AIA Shanghai Chapter reflects this reality as many of our chapter members are leaders in their respective practices. For this reason, AIA Shanghai has launched the Women’s Professional Committee in order to shine a light on female achievement in design practices. Our inaugural gathering will take place on March 18th. We invite you to join our Women’s Professional Committee to celebrate and elevate women who have been contributing to the success of China’s urbanization.

Greg Yager Inducted into the College of Fellows

It is with great pleasure that AIA Shanghai announces the elevation of Mr Gregory Yager to Fellow of the Institute (FAIA).  He will be inducted into the College of Fellows at an investiture ceremony on June 7th during this year’s AIA Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mr. Yager’s career has spanned the United States, China, Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, where his focus has been on the sustainable urban development of emerging global economies. Greg has helped lead the Planning and Urban Design team of Callison-RTKL, most notably as the former Director of Urban Planning in the Shanghai office, where he has spent the last 30 years.

His involvement in the AIA has been consistent throughout his professional life, having been a member of the Kansas Society of Architects, AIA Baltimore, AIA Los Angeles, AIA DC, AIA UK, AIA Hong Kong and now AIA Shanghai.  He has served as the Treasurer for the Manhattan Section of the Kansas Society of Architects, the Chairman of the Residential Design Awards Committee for AIA Baltimore and the AIA Hong Kong Urban Design Committee Co-Chair. His involvement in AIA Shanghai includes being a founding member of the organizing committee for the establishment of the chapter from 2010-2014, where he served as the first president of the chapter in 2015-16.  He also served as the chairperson of the AIA International Practice Committee Advisory Group in 2016 and is currently the AIA Shanghai Chapter representative to the AIA International Region Board.

The AIA Fellowship program was developed to elevate architects who have made significant contribution to architecture and society and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Election to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of the architect as an individual, but also honors before the public and the profession a model architect on a national, or international level. The AIA College of Fellows seeks to stimulate a sharing of interests among Fellows, promote the purposes of the Institute, advance the profession of architecture, mentor young architects, and be of ever-increasing service to society.

Please join the Chapter in congratulating Gregory Yager, FAIA, on this honor and on his continued success as an architect and AIA Fellow.
